What is pop music?

After taking a break last year, Call And Response Records’ Koenji Pop Festival is back in 2016, trying to answer that question once more with another all-day explosion of musical colour from all across the musical spectrum.

The event also kicks off the celebrations for 20000V/二万電圧’s 5th anniversary in its new Higashi Koenji location, so come along and help us pay tribute to this legendary live spot.

Koenji vs. Kyushu Pop Festival -- 10 FUCKING YEARS!!!! (September 27th, 2014)

My first event in Japan was exactly 10 years ago on September 27th 2004, so on the anniversary, I'm celebrating this landmark with old and new friends from my home in Tokyo and my home-away-from-home in Kyushu in this sure-to-be-legendary postpunk/new wave/alternative festival.

Koenji Pop Festival 2013 (November 2nd, 2013)

Call And Response Records is having its annual anniversary extravaganza a bit later than normal this year, but expect all the usual raw excitement and postpunktastic, indielicious, alternavisceral delights.

As usual, we'll have cheap, disgusting wine available for ¥100 a pop (believe me, it's worth less), or proper drinks available at the bar.

Koenji Pop Festival 2010

This year is the sixth annual edition of the somewhat ambitiously named Koenji Pop Festival and the third at Koenji's venerable and, erm, "intimate" Penguin House. As usual, there will be a cornucopia of musical fucked-uppery, with the messed-up all-girl garage punk of Kagoshima's Zibanchinka, the explosive post-punk of The Mornings, the delicately-formed new wave pop of Yamaco, the quirky alt-rock of Owllights, and various happenings inbetween.

As usual I'll be doing that thing with the horrible wine.

To accommodate all the bands, the event starts pretty early (4:00PM), with my never knowingly over-rehearsed band Natasha Forrest kicking things off, so if you don't want us to be lonely, come by for the start.

Koenji Pop Festival (October 10th 2009)

It's anniversary time again for C.A.R. with the fourth annual Koenji Pop Festival, as usual featuring a wealth of musical debauchery amid fountains of low quality alcohol. In total there will be ten bands performing, including three from the southern rock and roll Eden that is Kyushu, augmented by a wealth of local talent.

Along with a number of familiar faces like MIR, tacobonds, The Mornings, ruruxu/sinn (pronounced "lulue-shin"), Grouncover. and Zibanchinka (地盤沈下), the event will also feature Fukuoka instrumental trio Me I Sashimi (ミー愛さしみ), the fierce and sexy Hemay (悲鳴), the glam rock/kayoukyoku stylings of Momoiro Ageha (桃色アゲハ), not to mention old co-conspirators Abikyokan, who return to C.A.R. to dazzle you with their science.
