Foreign angles

Growing as a band or as a label in Japan can be a difficult and often dispiriting experience. Bands rehearse, write songs and play shows week after week and yet never seem to get a foothold. The paths to something greater seem few, and distant. However, looking overseas can be one way of breaking this sense of inertia.

This brings its own set of difficulties, since the cost of physically travelling overseas and the short amounts of time most Japanese musicians can take off work mean that foreign tours are only for the very wealthy or very dedicated. Embarking on something as logistically challenging as a tour isn’t the only way to reach out and keep things fresh though, and some of us here in the CAR family are working on a few different projects at the moment.

The most immediate one is a tour by US band Pregnant, starting November 1st and which Shingo from Tropical Death has (among others) been working hard to help set up and support.

Pregnant (from USA) Japan Tour:
11/1 Tokyo, Shimokitazawa Basement Bar, w/ Tropical Death, Bonstar
11/2 Tokyo, Akihabara Studio Revole, w/ 1000s of Cats, Mekare-Kare
11/3 Tokyo, Shinjuku Ninespices, w/ Loolowningen & The Far East Idiots, Windowz
11/4 Tokyo, Kunitachi Chikyuya, w/ Tropical Death, / Loolowningen & The Far East Idiots, Suppa Micro Pamchopp
11/7 Osaka, Namba Bears, w/ Los Oxxo Sexos, Tokiyo (And Summer Club), Sou + Kanchenjunga
11/8 Fukuoka, Kokura TBA
11/9 Hiroshima 4.14, w/ Usagi Bunny Boy, Uma-darake, Le Film, Shyboy

The other angle we’ve been working is setting up releases of a couple of split singles/EPs with overseas bands, although as always with projects like this that have so many moving parts, it’s difficult to know when is a safe time to announce any details. For now I’ll just say that one is a vinyl single that we’re producing in collaboration with a UK-based label, while the other will probably be a CD EP with another Asian band. In both cases, releases early next year are most likely. As far as tours supporting the releases go, they’re both under discussion and we’d love to do something if possible, but let’s just see how that goes, alright?

Other news from CARland is that I’ve given notice to quit one of my jobs in order to spend more time with writing and the label – two activities that are becoming increasingly difficult to separate, with all the problems that entails. Meanwhile, I’m DJing at about a hundred events over the weekend (well, three), so if you’re not catching the Pregnant tour on that particular day, by all means drop by.

11/3 (evening) @ Koiwa Bushbash – Excellent noise-rock event featuring Jailbird Y, In The Sun and more great bands.
11/3 (night) @ Shibuya Lush – Another event with a great looking lineup, which I’ll be joining at some insane hour of the night/morning.
11/4 (evening) @ Roppongi VARIT. – A ‘90s-themed DJ night featuring a pretty eclectic-looking range of DJs, at which I’ve threatened to play a set composed entirely of Guided By Voices but probably won’t follow through.

Iko Chérie Japan Tour (October 2016)

Marieは今までLisbonne、Zooey、Monade(StereolabのLaetitia Sadier もメンバー)で活動してきました。

Describing themselves as “A little bit of sweetness in a world of brutes”, Iko Cherie is the latest project from low-key polaroid-pop musician Marie Merlet, formerly of the groups Lisbonne, Zooey and Monade (with Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier). Iko Cherie’s debut album “Dreaming On” came out in 2015 on Elefant Records, drawing on a bittersweet seam of cinematic 1960s French pop and washed out indiepop doo-wop. The album features contributions from Merlet’s former Monade bandmates, and was mixed in Berlin with Schneider TM.

New releases from Call And Response this August + Jebiotto U.S. Tour news!

Coming out this month simultaneously on August 13th are two new albums by bands who debuted on the label as part of 2012's Dancing After 1AM compilation album.

First up is Jebiotto's Love Song Duet (CAR-76), the Tokyo synth-punk band's second mini-album and first with Call And Response. Jebiotto are currently just about to kick off a short U.S. East Coast tour with American mates Warm & Comfy.

Our second new release is Kagoshima psychedelic supergroup Futtachi's Tane to Zenra (CAR-74). Vocalist Iguz Souseki's previous band Zibanchinka released their album Hatsubai Chushi through Call And Response in 2011, racing through 15 tracks in a breakneck 28 minutes. Tane to Zenra, which we're releasing in co-operation with the band's own Baku no Yume Records, features a single track over a more stately 30 minutes.

Both Jebiotto and Futtachi will be appearing at our annual anniversary event at Higashi Koenji 20000V/Ni-man Den-atsu on Saturday September 27th, along with a huge cast of other bands from Tokyo and Kyushu. More details on that to follow.

Lastly, here are the details for Jebiotto's East Coast tour (listed below):

August 2nd (Sat)

Washington DC @ Bathtub Republic (day show - part of "In It Together Fest")
Baltimore, MD @ The Crown (night show)

August 3rd (Sun)

A superstar in his native Slovenia who has toured continental Europe and the UK and played alongside everyone from Crystal Castles to Melt Banana, N'toko has also made a second home of sorts for himself in Tokyo, where he regularly stays for extended periods, working with local indie and experimental musicians.

His music has twin roots in hip hop and experimental electronic music like EBM and industrial, and he has a profound fondness for the punk and alternative music scenes, not just for their music but also for their rawness, energy and independent spirit. He toured throughout Japan in Spring/Summer 2012 and his albums have received praise in the international media from outlets such as The Wire and MTV.

In Slovenia, N'toko's music and socially-conscious lyrics have made him a (sometimes unwilling) spokesperson for a generation, while in Japan he is fascinated by the trashy subcultures of Koenji, the avant-garde fashion world of Harajuku and the club scene of Shibuya. All of these themes collide in his music, strung together with a keen ear for beats and a dry sense of humour.

"Mind Business" is N'toko's second album released in Japan and shows influences from his life in Europe and his stays in Japan. This is easily apparent in the videos, with "The Baddest" (directed by by Tomaž Šantl) depicting sharply observed scenes of his native Slovenia, and "Mind Business" (directed by Matt Schley) a Sogo Ishii-inspired surreal mind trip through the backstreets of Koenji. The album was mixed and mastered by Slovenian producer Igor Vuk apart from the title track, produced by Swiss producer Beckoning, the album also draws from sessions with Japanese musicians like Seijiro Murayama, ZONZONO and Kaneko Yuki.

N'toko Balkan tour and new album "Mind Business" (CAR-77)

December 13th 2013 Belgrade (solo concert, with Repetitor and Molokai)

In addition, Dutch fans will be able to catch him at the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen on January 15th and 16th.

These shows will also be the first chance for audiences to get hold of N'toko's excellent new English language album Mind Business before its official Japan release in January. The album includes 13 new tracks, including some of the fruits of experiments he did on his last Japan tour as well as work with Swiss producer Beckoning.

The video for the title track, filmed in the backstreets of Koenji and Asagaya by Matt Schley in Summer 2012 is already up:

In addition, a video for The Baddest, directed by Tomaž Šantl is also now up:

Details on the Japanese release date and tour info will follow.

"Dancing After 1AM" release tour final event, Nagoya KD Japon, March 15th

After the October Tokyo release party and January's successful Kyushu tour, there's one final promotional event for Dancing After 1AM, this time at the lovely KD Japon in Nagoya (seriously, it's a contender for nicest, most intimate venue in the country). There are four bands, three of whom featured on the album and one of whom is among my favourite bands in Japan. It's also the first event I've ever been involved in in Nagoya, so I'm obviously very, very excited about this.

The compilation featured a track by Nagoya band Pop-Office, who will of course be taking part in the event, while Tokyo's Tacobonds, who missed the October party due to UK tour commitments, and Fukuoka's macmanaman, who missed the Kyushu tour because the drummer was on tour with another band, are also both playing. Finally, we've invited one local special guest band, the brilliant Freedom, to take part. Although they didn't feature on DA1AM, they were one of the standout bands from last year's Ripple compilation of Nagoya music (on which Pop-Office also featured), and they're one of the best bands in the city, so it's a supreme pleasure and honour to have them.

Date: 3/15 (Fri)
Place: Nagoya KD Japon
Time: 6:30pm open / 7:00pm start
Cost: ¥1800 adv / ¥2300 door
Live:
- TACOBONDS (Tokyo)
- macmanaman (Fukuoka)
- Pop-Office
- Freedom

Praha Depart live in Canada videos

As followers of this blog will no doubt know, Praha Depart were in Canada last month, and while they were there Mr. Rob Perry was filming them in his capacity as the tour's official cameraman. Here are the two Praha Depart clips, and you can check out his videos of the other bands -- Group Inou, Charan Po Rantan and Zazen Boys -- on the NMFT Vimeo page.

Busy July at CAR Records

The Kyushu x Nagoya Electric Pop Festival was a blast. Huge crowds on both days and some stunning performances. I'm not going to pick out best or favourite bands because it's really unfair on everyone else who was awesome as well, but I will say a special well done to Kobayashi Dorori, Hakuchi, Chainsaw TV and Odd Eyes, who made a great impression on a lot of first-time audience.

The rest of this month's a bit quiet, but there are a couple of nice shows with CAR people involved, and then things get very exciting again in July, so here's a quick rundown.

Date: June 17th (Sun)
Place: Shibuya Lush & Home
Event: N'toko live, along with Uhnellys, Yolz in the Sky, The Girl and more.

Date: June 30th (Sat)
Place: Koenji Amp Cafe
Event: Chicks Riot party, with a DJ turn by Ian Martin.

Anatopia (from Amsterdam) Japan tour 2012

Dutch electro-punks Anatopia are a duo comprised of Klaus Plötzlich and Henrietta Morgenstern. They take the slick, electronic techno-fetishism of Kraftwerk, the spiky, irony-laced geek-punk of Devo and the grimy garage rock of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, turning it to the purpose of creating simple, catchy, minimalist pop art nuggets.

While their lyrics deal with the duo's obsession with and fear of technology, they contrast this with a live setup that brings a sense of theatre to the stage but also focusses on sounds they can generate themselves in the moment. Henrietta plays synth and attacks a crash cymbal in her spare moments, while Klaus operates a kick drum and hi-hat with his feet at the same time as playing guitar with his hands.
